Cyber security: Why it matters so much to us and our clients

Cyber security: Why it matters so much to us and our clients

By Crystal Boston, Co-founder

There are many glamorous parts of running a business. Cyber security is… not one of them.

No one wakes up thinking, “Ooh, I can’t wait to update my password policy today!”

But ultimately cyber security is one of the most important responsibilities we have for our business and for our clients.

For us, it wasn’t an afterthought, it wasn’t something we bolted on once things got busy, it was the very first thing we tackled, long before onboarding our first client, sending our first invoice, or even choosing what biscuits to stock in the office (shoutout to JamCrackers Ltd.).

Because when your business handles sensitive financial information, the stuff people really don’t want floating around in the wrong inbox, you take no chances.

Here’s what shaped our approach, and why cyber security sits firmly at the heart of everything we do.

We started with security before anything else

Before we took on a single client, we put cyber security at the top of our priority list, because the nature of our work demands it.

We handle personal financial information, identification documents, payroll data, tax details.

(All the things cybercriminals would absolutely love to get their hands on).

We knew from day one that clients wouldn’t just be trusting us with their accounts; they’d be trusting us with their security.

And trust isn’t something you build retroactively.

Why we switched IT providers early on

Plenty of businesses stay with the same tech providers for years simply because switching feels like a hassle.

However, we’ve already moved cyber security and IT providers to ensure we’re always using the most secure, modern and robust solutions available.

The moment we realised someone else could better protect our systems, we packed our virtual bags and moved.

Because loyalty is lovely except when it compromises security.

Nothing left to chance when it comes to cyber security

We do regular training because it means:

  • We recognise phishing attempts
  • We understand common scams
  • We stay up to date on new threats
  • We can spot red flags instinctively

In other words, we don’t rely on luck we rely on knowledge.

We carefully choose every tool we use from laptops to cloud platforms through a cyber security lens.

This includes:

  • Encrypted devices
  • Strong authentication
  • Modern hardware
  • Secure, reputable software
  • Automatic backups
  • Enforced updates (no “remind me tomorrow” for six months)

Because a business is only as strong as the systems behind it.

We also have comprehensive policies that govern how we handle data, how we store it, how we share it and how we protect it.

They’re part of our everyday operations living rules that guide our behaviour and ensure every client interaction stays secure.

Security that protects our clients and keeps us moving

Cyber security is not something we treat as an afterthought.

It is built into how we work, how we protect client information and how we keep the business running if something goes wrong.

Our Business Continuity Plan is even printed and kept within easy reach because there is little point storing an emergency plan inside the very systems that might be unavailable.

That practical mindset runs through everything we do: clear responsibilities, secure processes, protected data, minimal downtime and plans that work in the real world.

For clients, that means secure portals, encrypted transfers, reliable communication and the peace of mind that their information is in safe hands.

We would always rather prevent a problem than scramble to fix one after the damage is done.

Strong cyber security protects operations, preserves trust and safeguards the reputation we have worked hard to build.

It also reflects the reality that small businesses are targets too and that remote working, while flexible, brings its own risks.

Whether we are in the office or working elsewhere, our approach stays the same:

Proactive, practical and focused on keeping both our business and our clients protected.

Final Thoughts

Cyber security isn’t something we do because we have to. It’s something we do because it’s who we are.

  • Responsible.
  • Prepared.
  • Trustworthy.
  • Professional.
  • Client-focused.

Our security is the quiet foundation beneath everything we do protecting your information, your trust and our reputation.
